I promise it's ok to do a photoshoot in the cold!
If you're worried about booking a session with me in the New England winter, maybe I can ease your mind as you stare outside watching the neighbors swear and chip ice off their windshield. While delicate little snowflakes gather on the top of their heads as they shovel out their car, I'm sitting there thinking this would be a nice day for a photoshoot. Yeah it's cold but, the sky has created a giant natural soft box and the lighting is amazing out there!
So book your engagement shoot or portrait shoot now and don't let the winter stop you!
Things I've learned doing photoshoots in the cold New England months.
The photos that are captured are different.
Think about how many couples have engagement or wedding pictures in the snow. You don't see that too often! It adds a delicate amazing look to the image and the soft light is perfect for skin tones, not to mention how even the lighting is. Imagine putting pics on instagram of you frolicking in the snow or cuddled up in a winter wonderland.
I pay attention to the model's/client's comfort level.
I'm good at noticing people's reaction to things. If they are uncomfortable, as a photographer if feel it's my job to do something about it. I'll pack a blanket, and that will only add a cozy look to the photo so we don't have to stop the shoot.
Find warm poses.
I'll do poses with your hands in your pockets or keep you moving with prompts and fun activities to make everyone laugh. If it's a couples shoot or engagement shoot, its just another reason to get some authentic cuddling while they keep each other warm.
Take a break.
Sit in the car with the heat on or end the shoot early if needed.
The most important thing I'v learned though....
HOT CHOCOLATE!!! I find it important to have a thermos of warm chocolaty goodness packed away. The look of joy as their eyes light up when they they find out I actually packed a thermos of hot chocolate is priceless. Who can be upset with a nice cup of hot chocolate warming their hands and hearts? RIGHT???
